Global Gems: Explore the Unexplored

Specialty coffee from Guatemala, Rwanda, Honduras, Indonesia and beyond. A curated trip through the world's most exciting origins, for filter and espresso.

Specialty Coffee from Guatemala, Rwanda, Honduras and More

Looking for coffee from the less obvious origins? Global Gems gathers specialty lots from Guatemala, Rwanda, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Indonesia and more, so you can taste how place and processing change the cup.

Each region has a signature: Rwanda for juicy and bright, Guatemala and Honduras for chocolate and sweetness, Uganda and Mexico for comforting espresso. New to origins? Start with our guide to specialty coffee.

East Africa: Clean and Juicy

Fruit from our partners at HAYB is a washed light roast from Bukure in Rwanda, grown at 1800 to 2200 meters, with nectarine, zesty brightness and deep sweetness. Rwanda is a good place to start if you like juicy filter coffee: bright, sweet and simple to brew in a V60 or AeroPress.

Mount Elgon from Uganda is the comfort option: a washed medium to dark espresso roast with walnut, dark chocolate and cinnamon, made by the Friends of Mothers Initiative, a community of 250 women.

Central America and Mexico: Sweet and Chocolatey

Guatemala and Honduras lean toward sweetness and body. Guatemala from HAYB brings milk chocolate, red fruits and deep cane sugar, and Marcala from COFFEE PLANT, a washed lot from the COHORSIL coop at 1100 m in Honduras, is thick and syrupy with cane sugar and molasses.

Add El Buho from Chiapas, Mexico, a washed medium roast with cacao, caramel and a hint of tangerine, and you have three espressos that cut through milk and shine black.

What are Global Gems?

A rotating selection of specialty coffees from origins beyond the big names: Guatemala, Rwanda, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Indonesia and more. The range changes with the seasons, so a favorite lot may sell out, and new lots arrive through the year. Think of it as a tasting passport: one bag per country is a simple way to learn what you like.

How do I choose between origins?

Start with flavor: Rwanda for juicy and bright, Guatemala for milk chocolate and red fruit, Honduras for syrupy sweetness, Uganda for walnut and dark chocolate. Every product page lists tasting notes, process and roast level, so you can compare lots before you buy. If you are new, pick one lot from two regions and compare them side by side.

Are these coffees good for espresso or filter?

Both. Each product is marked as filter, espresso or omniroast, so you can pick by brewer. For espresso try Guatemala, Honduras, Uganda or Mexico, and for filter try Rwanda. If you are unsure, an omniroast works in both. Check the roast level on each page too, because medium and dark roasts suit espresso best.

What is an anaerobic natural?

A process where whole cherries ferment without oxygen in sealed tanks before drying, which brings intense fruit and sweetness. It is one of several special processes, and our processing guide has the details. Anaerobic lots often taste more intense, with tropical fruit, spice or a boozy edge, and they brew well in an AeroPress or V60.
