Specialty decaf and low caf coffee with real flavor. Origin character, sweetness and body with at least 97 percent of the caffeine removed, or a gentler kick with our low caf blends.

Specialty Decaf and Low Caf Coffee, Full of Flavor

Looking for specialty decaf or low caf coffee? Good decaf starts with good coffee, and the lots here keep their origin flavor, sweetness and body with at least 97 percent of the caffeine removed. Late-night V60 or after-dinner espresso, no shakes.

Not ready to drop caffeine completely? Our low caf coffees from COFFEE PLANT blend decaf and regular lots, so you get a gentler kick that cuts the jitters without giving up the fruit and sweetness. Curious how it all works? Read our guide to specialty decaf.

How Are Decaf and Low Caf Coffees Made?

Specialty decaf uses gentle methods such as Swiss Water, sugarcane-based ethyl acetate or CO₂, and the caffeine is removed from the green beans before roasting. Mellow Decaf from our partners at COFFEE PLANT is decaffeinated with CO₂ washing and mountain water and tastes of milk chocolate and peanuts, while HAYB's decaf is a washed Colombian processed with the sugarcane method, with peach, raspberry and 85.5 SCA points.

Low caf takes a different route. COFFEE PLANT blends a CO₂ decaf natural lot with a regular natural lot, so the cup keeps some caffeine and all of the personality. LOW Very Berry brings blueberry, raspberry and white chocolate, and LOW Jungle Fruit leans tropical, with apricot and milk chocolate.

Which One Should You Pick?

Choose by flavor, just like any other coffee. Want fruit and florals? Placebo Fine Decaf from Heresy comes from Tolima in Colombia and brings red fruits, citrus and milk chocolate. Want something dark and cozy for dessert time? Decaf But Tasty from COFFEELAB is a Swiss Water espresso from Chiapas with roasted peanuts and malt.

Not sure how much caffeine to cut? A low caf bag fits the afternoon and a full decaf fits the evening. Keep one of each on the shelf and pick by the clock.

Is decaf coffee caffeine free?

Almost. Specialty decaf has at least 97 percent of the caffeine removed, which leaves only a trace per cup. If you need to avoid caffeine completely for medical reasons, ask your doctor first, because even a trace can matter. For everyone else, decaf is an easy way to enjoy the ritual late in the day. Our specialty decaf guide goes through the numbers.

What is low caf coffee?

Low caf (low caffeine) coffee is a blend of decaf and regular lots, so it has less caffeine than a normal cup but more than decaf. The LOW series from COFFEE PLANT uses a CO₂ decaf natural lot plus a regular natural lot, which keeps the fruit and sweetness while cutting the jitters. It is a good middle ground for afternoons and evenings.

Does decaf taste worse than regular coffee?

Not with good beans and a gentle process. Specialty decaf can taste as sweet and fruity as regular lots, and some of ours score 85 SCA points or higher. Try HAYB Sie Przelewa Decaf, a washed Colombian with peach and raspberry, and judge for yourself. Fresh roasting and careful brewing matter just as much as the decaf method.

How do I brew decaf and low caf coffee?

Use slightly more coffee and a slightly finer grind than usual and water around 93 °C. Immersion brewers like the French press and Clever Dripper are very forgiving, and a V60 or AeroPress shows off the fruit in the low caf lots. For espresso, dial in like any other coffee and adjust the grind to taste.
